Chico celebrated its holiday kickoff Friday as hundreds gathered at City Plaza for the 44th annual Christmas tree lighting hosted by the Downtown Chico Business Association.

Mayor Andrew Coolidge gave a message of unity to downtown following performances by the Sounds of the Valley Chorus.

“About half our town wasn’t here 25 years ago,” Coolidge said. “Not all of us are from here so we need to be caring and loving to those who are new to Chico.”

As Santa Clause arrived to the plaza from a Chico fire engine, he shared the stage with residents to light the Christmas tree marking the holiday season.
