A man who allegedly brandished a knife during a standoff at a San Jose elementary school on Wednesday was booked into jail after a mental health evaluation, police said.

The man, whose name was not released, was arrested and jailed on suspicion of crimes that include criminal threats, brandishing a knife and trespassing on school grounds, according to San Jose police.

Officers and crisis negotiators responded at 10:53 a.m. to Empire Gardens Elementary School at 1060 E. Empire St. in the city’s Northside neighborhood.

A shelter-in-place was issued for the school, but students there weren’t in danger during the standoff, police said.

About 1:40 p.m., authorities said that the suspect had been taken into custody and would be assessed by mental health professionals.

No other details about the suspect or the incident were released.
